He was my grandfather. His wife was NELLIE LULU MARSHALL QUICK. They were living in Tingley, Ringgold, IA, when my father was born Dec 25, 1903. He was named NATHANIEL LAWRENCE QUICK, he had an older sister, FLORENCE LUCILLE QUICK. My father mentioned his friend whose last name was Burkhalter. Arthur Craig Quick lists RUSSELL RICHARD QUICK in his book, QUICK FAMILY IN AMERICA, 1620-1942. No date of birth, no date of death.

Does anyone know anything about RUSSELL RICHARD QUICK

My grandparents, Thelma and Everett Moon lived east of Beaconsfield in the 40's to 1962. When I passed through a few years back I noticed the school was rubble. Did it just fall down? I collected a couple bricks, my aunt Marilyn (Lavone) graduated from there. I remember trips to town to sell eggs and milk.

My ggrandfather Newell Cone came into Ringgold Co from Mass in 1860 according to his handwritten Obit. His (2) wife Mary Breckinridge died in 1861 and he moved to Clarke Co. in 1862. I have encountered many Cones all over the country and almost all originated in CT from Daniel Cone who came to CT in 1651/1652 from Scotland. I would like to know (1) where Mary Breckinridge Cone is buried and (2) the connection between Newell and the Cones in Ringgold Co.

I am trying to locate the Date of Death for Polly Lewis. I believe it is between 1910 and 1920. She is buried in Lots Creek Cem., Ringgold Co. with her husband ASA B. Lewis and two sons Warren and C.S. LEWIS. The dates are worn off of the headstone. Is there any agency who has the records for this cemetery? Can someone local possibly do a look up for me? Thank you in advance.

Re: AMANDA ELVINA (DULY) BEAR

Message #248286

Date: 09/21/2009

DO YOU HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT OUR GREAT GRANDMOTHER?

Her name was Amanda Elvina Duly (or Duley, Dooley, Dewley). She lived near Hopeville, Clarke County, Iowa in 1872 and was thought to be a Native American of the Fox Tribe. Her half brothers and sisters plus their descendants have lived in this area for years so we hope they can provide stories, letters, or some sort of documentation about Amanda. We are interested in anything that might inform us about her early years and was she a Native American.

Amanda’s mother (according to her sketchy obituary) was Maria (or Marial) Duly who married John L. Watson on 22 May 1853 in Harrison County, Missouri. Amanda was born 19 September 1850 in the same county. We wonder if Amanda was born to Native American parents and then was taken in by Maria and John Watson before their first child, Lucretia Jane Watson, was born in 1857. Their second child, Thomas W. Watson, was born in 1859 in Missouri before the family moved to Clarke County, Iowa. In that county John W. Watson was born in 1862 followed by William H. Watson in 1864.

Lucretia Jane Watson married Salomen Shafstoll and they had children Gladys and Dewey.

John W. Watson, who was buried in the Hopeville Cemetery in 1948, married Rebecca Booth and they had five children: Royal Dell in 1884, Edith Leona in 1886, Ira Everett in 1891, Ethel Mae in 1895, and Beulah in 1897.

Searches of the U.S. Census and the Clarke County Census have not answered any of our questions. Our searching and that of genealogists have not provided the wanted information in Harrison County, Missouri or Clarke County, Iowa.

Then in 1872 Amanda Elvina Duly married Solomon Bear at his home in Ringgold County, Iowa. We understand that Hopeville was the supply town for this developing neighbor county. Solomon had been recently widowed with a 10 year old son to raise and a farm that needed much work. Amanda and Solomon had four daughters (Dollie Ann, Nellie E., Mary M., and Elizabeth Agnes) and one son (William Franklin) who is my grandfather. Amanda and Solomon were both buried in the Bear Cemetery, which was a short distance from the Oliver Cemetery. Solomon’s heritage was Swiss Mennonite with a last name spelling of Bar which was eventually changed by census takers to Bear.

The 1880 U.S. Census lists all of the people identified above. And the Ringgold County genealogy records present information about Amanda and Solomon after they married. But there is nothing about the early years of Amanda Elvina Duly Bear. Can you help us?

GEORGE and EVALINE REYNOLDS WATTS were my Great Grandparents. I have been trying to find out who George's parents were. Thank you to Sharon Becker, whom put in obituaries, I finially have found his parents names. JAMES and SARAH JOHNSTON WATTS. I am searching for any information on them or any of the 11 other children besides George.

It appears James just surfaced in 1796 Indiana, 1856 Henry Co, Ia and no location til 1893 when he died while living in George's home in Ringgold County, Ia.

George's birthdate is also unsure, I have a Bible page that it is written Sept. 15, 1850 Des Moines County, Iowa. I believe it might of belonged to Evaline , whom wrote down her Wedding date in it. I also have a note from someone at one time that it states his Birthdate is Sept. 15, 1852 Tama County, Iowa.

I am on the pioneer cemetery commission for Ringgold County. We are in the process of restoring the Pumptown Cemetery, Union Township, Ringgold County, IA. Many stones are missing and William Cone has come to our attention. William Cone is shown to own 40 acres, SW quarter of Section 21, Union Township, Map dated 1915, appearing in "A Century of Memories, Ellston, Iowa, 1881-1981". William H. Cone is also listed as the last postmaster of Union Hill Post Office in Jan. 2, 1877. Union Hill was closed when the Wirt Post Office opened. This change occurred when the railroad came through and the town was moved to Wirt, later renamed Ellston. William H. Cone served as Wirt's postmaster in April 3, 1882. Union Hill was located in the southern part of section 15, Union Township. Wirt/Ellston is located in the SW Quarter of section 20, Union Township. May 27, 1878 reported in the "Ringgold Record", "Our Sabbath schools are very pleasant. We will probably have a Sunday School convention at Mr. Cone's grove in Pumptown." This was probably a reference to the Pumptown Country school, where Sunday school events were often held. The school was located in the NW quarter of Section 22, Union Township. The Pumptown Cemetery is located in the NW quarter of section 15, Union Township. Is William H. Cone buried in Pumptown Cemetery and his is one of the missing stones? The only other Cone's buried in Ringgold Co. are in the Ellston Cemetery, Sec. 30: Bert Free 1887-1955, Florence E. 1909-2000, Henry 1875-1957, Kate 1883-1966, Mike F. 1848-1918.

According to William CONE's obituary, he did die at Wirt on November 21, 1883, which would pre-date the move from Wirt to Ellston (if I have my dates correct).

NOTE: Margaret Motter had posted on the query board at ancestry.com: "I am looking for anyone in Ringgold County who would be kind enough to check and see if there is an obit for William Cone, b. 1815, Vt, died Nov. 21, 1883, in Ringgold Co, and is buried there. He was marrried to Rosanna Free, and had 9 children with her, all of whom went to Iowa with them. His parents were Joseph and Phebe Cone, and he went to Iowa from Ohio, about 1869. Thanks to this forum, I was able to find him a while back, and would now like to see if there is more about him, as I know very little. I also cannot find where Rosanna went after he died. Does anyone have any idea or connection? Thanks in advance for any help that can be given."

William CONE Sr. does not appear in the WPA Graves Survey database or at findagrave.com.

Margaret Motter later posted on the query board at ancestry.com: "I am looking for info on the family of JOHN LONG- ROSANNA CONE. In the 1880 census,of UNION TOWNSHIP, RINGGOLD COUNTY, IOWA, they are present living down the road from WILLIAM H. CONE, ROSANNA FREE CONE, HER parents. I have not found a marriage record or death record for ROSANNA CONE LONG. I feel certain this is the right person because of the name, date of birth, place of birth, and the fact she is just down the road. In the 1885 STATE OF IOWA CENSUS, they are still there, in the same place, but by the time of the 1895 STATE CENSUS, JOHN LONG was there with some of the children, and his mother, POLLY LONG, but NO ROSANNA. Is there anyone who has any information on this family? IF so, I would sure like to hear from them. THe CONE family has been very hard to trace, the girls especially, and their families. I feel certain that ROSANNA CONE LONG would have died in Ringgold, probably Union Twp., because her husband is still there after she is missing. Her death would have to be between 1885-1895, unless she was just not present in their home at the time, which is doubtful. ANY help would be so appreciated!"

RE: OBITUARY - WELDON C. SWIGART found on the Ringgold Co. IAGenWebProject http://iagenweb.org/ringgold/obitht001/obit-swigartweldonc.html

Do you have a way to put in a query for Ringgold Co. or contacting family from the obituaries posted?

I am a Mc Aninch by marriage, but my late fathers family was from the Stark Co., Ohio area, mainly Carroll Co. and before that when it and Stark Co. were a part of the original Tuscarawas Co.

I have Swigart connected to the following allied surnames and wonder if there is a connect:

Best, Ebersole, Hawk, Kintner, Lamb, and Moore. A large number of these families are buried in the old cemetery in Carrollton, Ohio.

Is there any way to post a query or pass along the information to the Swigart family members who survived Mr. Swigart?

Thank You.

My wife's aunt, Edith Wells James, continues to search for the grave or any history on one of her uncles. Her mother was Clara Moler Wells, a member of the Molers in the Redding area. She had three brothers, Geor ge, Sel (Selma), and Ed. Uncle Ed is the mystery. Edith's memory is as follows: Ed was a long time bachelor, living on a farm in the Redding area. Sometime, she believes in the 1930s area, Ed was found dead hanging on a fence post. According to Edith's memory as a young girl, Uncle Ed supposedly had lots of money, did't trust banks, so kept his money in buckets with ears of corn on top to hide the presence of that money. She doesn't remember and she believes the whole thing was an embarassment to the family so was hushed up and not talked about.

Wonder if any one has heard this story and/or knows anything about the tale. I find information on George and on Sel, but nothing of record via internet sources for Ed.

I am doing research on the family that came from Germany to Pennsylvania to Ohio to Ringgold Iowa. I descend from John Walter and Susan Swigart, their daughter Catharine(this name has been passed down for generations, although spelled differently). I am so confused right now its not funny. I have run across trees that say John's (1826) father is John (1798) and mother is Sarah Gnagy(1800). I was trying to track down on the US 1850 census John (1826) family and John (1798) family. I have found both but I now believe John (1826) is not the son of John(1798). My reason being is that John (1826) was married and living with his wife Susanah(Susan) and their daughter Harriet who was born in 1848, they lived in Springfield Lucas Ohio. I found them under ancestry.com under the last name Walters. Now for John (1798) his family I also found on ancestry.com under the last name Watters, but they have a John listed as living there same birthdate as my John. What I dont get is how my John can be included as living in 2 places at once. They also have his son Christian (Watters) born in 1840 in Ohio living with the Rickman family(I don't get that either). My John (1826) died at the early age of 37 around 1864, his wife died 2 years before that which left his 3 daughters orphans. My G. G. Grandmother Catharine was very young at the time and I found her living with Catharine and Edward Stuck in the 1870 census in Lotts Creek Ringgold Iowa. I believe Catharine Stuck to be John's(1798) daughter. I have not located Harriet or Mary Elizabeth in the 1870's census to see who they were living with, I assume they were married though. They both married Harrows from Iowa that resided between Iowa and Missouri so I assume they stayed with someone in those areas.

I will now give a breakdown of familys

John Walter/s born 1826 in Ohio married Susannah Swigart born 1831 in Ohio

Thier children:

1.Catharine Ann born Oct 10 1860 in Iowa married William Shackelford. died in Sept 26 1919 in Omaha Nebraska.

2.Harriet born Aug 26 1848 in Ohio. Married Francis(Frank) M Harrow. I dont know where she died.

3.Mary Elizabeth born Aug 30 1852 in Ohio. Married James S Harrow, They divorced sometime before 1900. She died in Souix City Clay Iowa. I also dont know if she remarried.

John Walter/s born 1798 in Pennsylvania married Sarah Gnagy born 1800 in Pennsylvania.

Their Children:

1.John G born 1826 in Ohio. Married Susan Swigart

2.Michael born 1823 in ohio died at the age of 21 died in Ohio.

3.Peter born 1825 Ohio died at the age of 34 in Iowa.

4.Catharine born 1828 Ohio married Edward Stuck died 1903 in Iowa.

5.Frances(Fanny) born 1831 in Ohio. Married Isaac Swigart. Died 1921 in Iowa. I know for sure she is Johns kid.

6.Elizabeth born in 1833 in Ohio. Married Peter Andrews. Died 1924 in Iowa. I know for sure she is Johns kid.

7.Ann*Anna*Annie*Anne born 1838 in Ohio. Married a Rearick. She died in 1888 in Ohio. I know for sure she is Johns kid.

8.Christian born in 1840 in Ohio. Married a Strayer. Died 1891 in Ohio. I know for sure he is Johns kid.

Any one who has been researching this family please help me with this. Also is there any way it could be a mixup on the 1850 census and they accidentally added John cause they were use to him being there since he had recently moved on with his family?

Thanks,

Margie

Whitehead Family

Poster: Suzanne Pitt Whitehead
Date: January 13, 2009
I am researching my husbands' Whitehead family. I am currently tracing his "lost" g-g-uncle John T. (prob. Thomas) Whitehead. He was born in Blount Co., TN abt. 1855 and is believed to have moved to Indiana after 1875.

I find him there married to an Annie Ike in 1882. One of their children was Howard Whitehead, b. 14,1885. I believe this to be the Howard Whitehead who married Lucinda as shown on your page: http://iagenweb.org/ringgold/familypages/fam-rubyfamily.html

Ida Jane RUBY married Walter NORTON
Children of Ida Jane (RUBY) & Walter NORTON:
    2) Lucinda NORTON married Howard WHITEHEAD

Howard's W W I Draft Registration (dated Sept. 12, 1918) card lists a Lusinda Whitehead of Clinton, Ind. as his closest relative. This is presumably his wife.

I would appreciate any info you might have on this connection in the Edgar Co., IL or Vermillion Co., IN area.

Thanks,

I would like to purchase a copy of this book if I can locate the source to request it. Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

I received this e-mail inquiring about the Lohrmann family in Iowa. I wanted to share this by posting it on the query boards:

Dear Friends,

I'm from Buenos Aires in Argentina and I'm tracing the genealogy of my great-grandfather who was born in the USA.

I'm contacting you because I'm looking for the birthplace of my great-grandfather Henry Clay Lohrmann son of Bartholomäus Lohrmann and Elizabeth Douglas Beattie.

According to an old resume wrote by a daughter of Henry Clay, he was born in Ringols in des Moines, but I found a County and a City named des Moines.

My great-grandfather was Henry Clay Lohrmann and was born in Jan 14th, 1875.

Henry has a brother named David Douglas Lohrmann who was born in Jan 1st, 1872.

Henry and David were sons of Bartholomäus Lohrmann (who was born in Ballendorf, Alb-Donau-Kreis, Württemberg, Germany) and Elizabeth Douglas Beattie from Canada.

I've a Census of Las Animas County in Colorado where I could find the whole family including two step-daughters of Bartholomäus.

My question is regarding the birthplace of Henry Clay and David Douglas.

Do you know if there is a possibility to find the birth record of my ancestry (may be church records)?

I really hope you could assist me in my investigation.

I thank you in advance your kindly answer.

With warm regards from Buenos Aires , Argentina.

Carlos Lohrmann

I am trying to find descendants of the family of Joseph Ingram and Julie Brezee or Breezee, who lived in Decatur and Ringold County, Iowa

Joseph Ingram was born 20 February of 1851 in Warren County, Indiana. He died the 31 of January of 1937 and is buried at Pleasonton, in Decatur County, Iowa. Julie was born the 22 of July of 1854 in Warren County, Iowa. She died 11 of August of 1932 Their children were Ernie, Ira, Ottie, Amanda, Mina, Clifford, Bert and Tony Dennis.

Joseph's parents were Herd Ingram and Jane Cozad.

Julie's obit says her parent are Joshua and Rebecca Brazee.

We have gotten the descendants of Tony Dennis, but have not been able to find much on the older children.

Can someone help me. I am glad to share.

Loren Ingram, son of Bert, married Viola Piper, my wife's aunt. Myron Ingram lives in Kellerton, Iowa. He is doing Ingram genealogy. However, he winters in Texas. They have an annual Ingram reunion. I have attended it here in Leon, Iowa.

Does anyone have information on the Tennant family of Mt. Ayr? I have a geneology and lots of photos from my paternal grandfather's family but the only record of them on this website is high school alumna lists from the early 1900s. Are there any descendents still in the area? Thanks for any info you can send.

I would like to compare information to see if we're related. My grandmother from Mt. Ayr had the maiden name of Tennant. Her father was born near Mediapolis. Previous generations were from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Ireland.

Comments:
Looking for information regarding the last years of life of my great-great grandfather, Conrad HETZEL, who appears in the 1900 census of Union County. In that census he was living at 809 S. Cherry with his daughter Mary, her husband, Clarence Jolly, and their son, Aubrey, who was born in May, 1898. I know the following about Conrad HETZEL: He was born in Wuerttemburg in November, 1833 and emigrated from Germany to the US in 1852. He was in Henry County, Iowa in 1860 and in Ringgold County in 1870 and 1880. He was a widower in 1900; his wife Mary passed away in April, 1881 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Poe Township, Ringgold County. The 1880 census shows 4 children; the 1860 census shows 5 different children. One of those 1880 children is my great-grandfather, also named Conrad HETZEL, who was born in 1866 and died in 1963. His obituary says that he lived all of his life in Ringgold County- except for a short time when he lived in Creston. I know he was married in Creston in 1892. There's an Aubrey JOLLY in the Social Security Master Death Index who was born in May, 1898 and died in November, 1990. The geography in his record is Washington State. Could the entire family have moved to the Pacific Northwest? I would like to find out when and where the senior Conrad HETZEL died and where he is buried. An obituary might answer a lot of the questions I have about him and his other children.

I need information on William "Will" and "Retty" WIGHT who lived in New Hampton, Harrison Co. Mo., from the 1930's through the late 1940's. They were related to the WILSON and CASE families who lived in Iowa, in the Ringgold City community in Lotts Creek Township, Ringgold Co. They did not have children of there own, but took in and may have adopted a boy called "Lee". I remember visiting the WRIGHTS with my parents in the early 1940's and again later when Lee was home on leave from the Army. I would like to correspond with anyone who knew these folks, and exchange information.

Am looking for info on family of Marion Francis MULL. He married Sarah COMER b. Dec 1874; one son Claude b. Oct. 1899. Resided Lincoln Twp. in Harrison Co, 1900. By 1910, Marion shows up in Ringgold Co., IA and is listed as widowed. His son Claude is not listed either. I'm assuming Sarah & Claude died between 1900-1910. There are two cemeteries in Lincoln Twp., Lincoln Center and Weaver Chapel. Both are near Hatfield. Is there anyone that can do lookups in these cemeteries or know if there is an index available?

Thanks in advance.
